Obituary - Peter Miles QSM

We regret to advise that Peter Miles (MAI CA) passed away on September 2nd, aged 89.

Peter became a Life Member of Judo NZ in 2006 having previously been an
Honorary Officer. These awards were testament of his long service to Judo NZ and judo in general.

During his long service to Judo Peter was active at club, area and national level.

He originally stated Judo over 60 years ago and founded Mairusu Kai almost
50 years ago.

He was a Canterbury stalwart and Area Director for many years. For some of
this time he and Les Brindley swapped the roles of Area Director and Area President
in alternate years.

Peter’s long service at national level for many years included being JNZ Sports
Director, an active referee (OJU B) and member of JNZ’s Management Board.
In 1973 Peter attained his 1st Kyu grade and was subsequently promoted to 1st
Dan in 1983, 2nd Dan in 1990, 3rd Dan in 1995 and finally in 2003 he was
promoted to his lifetime grade of 4th Dan.

Peter was a Justice of the Peace (JP) and one of only 3 of our members who
have been awarded the Queens Service Medal (QSM) which was in recognition
of his wider community service as well as his significant contribution to Judo.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Helen of 63 years, his family and also his
many judo colleagues & friends.

Service Details:
In accordance with Peter's wishes a private cremation has taken place.
