NZL Ref at South Pacific Games

Bryce Butterfield (MAI CA) has been selected by the OJU Referee Commission to be New Zealand’s sole referee at the South Pacific Games currently being held in Samoa.

The Judo is spread over two days, 16-17 July. It’s live on Sky pop up channel 57 and the draw has been posted on the official South Pacific Games website.

13 countries are participating.

The five women’s and seven men’s categories are well represented and there is a men’s and women’s teams event scheduled which no doubt will be hotly contested in the true spirit of island sport

Japanese Embassy Budo Exhibition

The Embassy of Japan and Victoria University of Wellington, in cooperation with Japan Foundation, are hosting the Japan Foundation’s Travelling exhibition “The Spirit of Budō.


The History of Japan's Martial Arts” will take place from 2nd July 2019 until 26th July 2019, at the Atrium, Victoria University of Wellington, 139 Vivian Street, Wellington.

This exhibition was planned and produced against a background of strong international interest in Japan's martial-arts culture. In it, you can expect to see the brief history of Japanese martial arts—from battlefield combat technique (bujutsu), to popular sports or physical exercise tempering body and spirit (budō). Entry is free.

NZL Referees In International Action Again

Craig Bartlett (HOW AK) and Dianne Limbrey (WEL WN) were again in action refereeing at the European Open in Romania earlier this month.

Congrats to both for keeping us on the world refereeing stage.

NZ Referees On World Stage

Craig Bartlett (HOW AK) and Dianne Limbrey (WEL WN) are currently in Europe gaining additional experiece refereeing at the top level.

The photo is from the Senior European Cup in Podcetrtek, and the NZ pair were among 29 referees spread over four mats for the competition.  They were the only referees from outside Europe.

This coming weekend Craig and Dianne will both be in Cluj, Romania for the European Open.

We wish them every success.

Wendy van der Molen (WEL WN) has been selected as a finalist in the Official of the Year division for the 2019 Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards.It is pleasing to see Judo featuring in the awards list.

The current Wellington Area Director, Wendy has been nominated for her refereeing contribution.

Awards are presented on 19th June, and we extend all our best wishes to Wendy in the final voting round.

2019 WN Area Grassroots Camp

The following is a report from WN Area;

When Gisborne Judo Club van arrived at El Rancho on Friday 15th March adrenaline of those present started racing.  Jason King and Kiki Velloza were the Guest Coaches for the annual Grassroots Camp and they brought 7 club members with them.
There were 80 young Judoka on the mat for 2 days learning from Jason’s and Kiki’s worldly Judo knowledge and experience.  Palmerston North Judo Club and Forgotten Art Judo Club also had members attend.  On Sunday the Chocolate Fish and Beat-up-a-black-belt events created lots of smiles and laughter.
The atmosphere of the weekend was exciting for Judoka, coaches, parents and volunteers who were there.  Thank you Jason and Kiki for your time given to us in Wellington.

Success In Peru

We have three members currently competing in three Continental Opens in South America - Justine Bishop (NJS AK), Jason Koster (CJA CA), and Elliott Connolly (CJA CA).

The first of these opens was held in Lima, Peru over the weekend and we are pleased to advise that Justine fought her way to a bronze medal in the Under 57 kg category and Jason did the same in the Under 100 kg category.

Two bronze medals is a great start in their first tournament - congratulations!

The three now move on to Cordoba, Argentina this weekend and Santiago, Chile the weekend following.

We wish all three good luck for these events and hopefully more medals.

2018 Dan Gradings

NZL Players Taste Success At OJU Open

JNZ had a relatively small team of 13 attend the recent OJU Open for Seniors and Juniors held in Perth, Australia.

Overall a medal haul of 5 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze was achieved.

Silver At World Veterans

At the 2018 IJF World Championships for Veterans in Cancun, Mexico - Vitaly Alliluev (UNI AK) won silver for New Zealand.

Vitaly came second in the M5 (-55y/o) category.  This impressive performance followed up his silver medal in Fort Lauderdale in 2016.

The 2018 World Championships for veterans had 45 countries represented, with 789 competitors fighting.

JNZ congratulates Vitaly on yet another impressive international achievement.

Dave Browne (National Technical Director) was refereeing at this event.

Rihari Off To The Youth Olympics

JNZ is pleased to announce that the New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed the selection of Rihari Iki (HOW AK) to attend the Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Rihari will fight in the combined men’s weight comprising the Under 73 kg and Under 81 kg categories.

Rihari will be accompanied by National Coach Kiki Velloza (GIS WB).

Also attending the games will be Craig Bartlett (HOW AK) as one of the IJF selected officiating referees.

We wish Rihari all the best!

Obituary - Peter Miles QSM

We regret to advise that Peter Miles (MAI CA) passed away on September 2nd, aged 89.

Peter became a Life Member of Judo NZ in 2006 having previously been an
Honorary Officer. These awards were testament of his long service to Judo NZ and judo in general.

During his long service to Judo Peter was active at club, area and national level.

Our condolence to Helen & family.
