We regret to advise that Lou Bourdot passed away on July 25th aged 88. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce (JNZ Honorary Member), his family and also his many judo colleagues & friends.
He was always known as Lou in judo circles but as Robin elsewhere.
Lou became a Honorary Officer of Judo NZ in 2004. This award was a testament to his long service to Judo NZ and judo in general. This included being a member and Convenor of the JNZ Referees Commission for many years.
He was one of the referees selected to officiate at the 1990 Commonwealth Games

Obituary - Leon Riley

JNZ is sad to announce the passing of Leon Riley (Sandan), at the age of 92.
Leon started Judo in 1968 at Henkada. He was a Life Member of Henkada and Waikato Area, and served as Area President for eight years. In this capacity he was a JNZ Officer as part of the NZJF Management Board.
He was also the NZL Team Co-manager for the Oceania Championships in 1979.
The JNZ Diploma of Merit was awarded to Leon in 1999 in recoginition of his service to Judo.

JNZ And KuSakura Oceania Announce Partnership

Judo New Zealand and KuSakura Oceania are excited to announce their partnership ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Under the terms of the agreement, KuSakura Oceania will become the official supplier to the members of the New Zealand National Judo team ranked in the top 100 of the IJF World Ranking List who are participating on the International Judo Federation circuit as they strive to earn qualifying points for Paris 2024.
Furthermore, Judo New Zealand has been appointed as the official and sole distributor for KuSakura Oceania products in New Zealand.

Judo New Zealand is about to embark on a major strategic review looking to transform our organisation and position ourselves for the future.
As part of this positioning we are looking to strengthen our board and gain more diversity through adding appointed directors.
We are seeking applicants for two Appointed Director vacancies both of which are new positions. One position will be for two years the other position will be for one year (with the possibility of extending for a further two years).

2023 Australian Judo Open - Military Championships

Judo Australia plans to hold a Military Championship scheduled for 2-3 Sep 23 in Brisbane, QLD.
Current serving and former members of the ADF and foreign militaries will be invited to participate.
As with tournaments on the Judo Australia National Events Series, I invite you to consider representing the defence forces at this tournament by competing or refereeing.
Further details will be released by Judo Australia at a later date however, it is expected there will be Individual (including Novice, Open, Masters [+30 yo] and Disability) and Mixed Team (3 males, 3 females) categories with all competions held under International Judo Federation rules.

Award Of 8th Dan

Jim McPhee MNZM (JNH AK) has been awarded a Lifetime Award of Grade to the rank of 8th Dan.
Jim is a longstanding member of JNZ and has been involved - amongst a much longer list -as a club coach, Area Director, international competitor, coach / manager to national teams, holder of many adminstrative roles internationally as well as in JNZ (including Board member, National Technical Director, and currently chair of the JNZ Grading Commission).
He was awarded the Member of NZ Order of Merit in the recent New Year's Honours list for his contribution and service to Judo.

New Award Announced

JNZ is pleased to announce that the first recipient of a new award - the Jim McPhee Award - has been confirmed by the JNZ Board and awarded to Hayley Gatward (UNI AK).
This new award was announced at the 2022 JNZ AGM. The award was requested by the family of JNZ member Jim McPhee (MNZM) as a celebration of his life in Judo on his 80th birthday last year. The endowment of $50,000 is to enable annual awards of up to $2000 to be provided to successful applicants. These awards are aimed at Junior and Senior competitors for ongoing development with

Stan Cantrill Visit

UK’s Stan Cantrill (6th Dan) - a multi European and World Veterans medalist - and his partner Jay’ne have been holidaying in NZ.
Stan has a lifetime of judo experience and numerous sporting and judo qualifications including coaching, refereeing, examining and as a medic qualified in anatomy and physiology.
During their travels through NZ Stan has run masterclasses at Rotorua Judo Club, Wellington Judo Academy, Blenheim Judo Club, Alexandra Judo Champ Academy combined with Queenstown’s Te Manawa, Dunedin’s Renshuden and - before flying out of Christchurch on Tuesday - a final masterclass at Christchurch School of Judo.

NZL Results On International Stage

A huge result for Sydnee Andrews (GIS WB) picking up a Silver Medal at the European Open in Rome.Sydnee knocked over World #8 Xu from China (who achieved 5th place at the Tokyo Olympics) on her way to the final. 
Great job Sydnee!
In addition to the fanastic result from Sydnee, our other 4 Kiwis also did us proud.
Maarten De Ridder (REN CA) finished with a 5th place in the -81kgs category in Tunis narrowly missing out on the bronze medal.
Noah Wallis (TKJ AK) also had a placing in Tunis finishing up 7th in the -90kgs.
